Fishy February; A-Z of a Mermaid's Friends (U)
U - Unicornfish
An underwater unicorn 🦄 These Tangs can reach around 60cm. Their bony horn will only begin to grow once they’re around 15cm long! Unicorn Tangs swim in schools along inshore coral reefs from the Red Sea to Hawaii, and Japan to Australia. They’re usually found between 5-80m depth, but have been reported at 180m! To entice females to spawn, males perform a shimmering movement and their colors become more brilliant. ✨ The tail blades of Unicorn Tangs are capable of inflicting deep cuts. Though these fish are not generally aggressive toward humans, divers should avoid chasing or cornering them and fishermen must exercise caution when removing them from hooks and nets.
